MPN in Google Shopping feeds

Updated 2026-07-19

The MPN is the manufacturer part number. Together with brand it identifies products that have no GTIN. Google uses the pair to match your offer to its catalog. The cap is 70 characters.

How this app fills it

  • By default the MPN comes from each variant's SKU in Shopify.
  • The Identifiers tab can turn MPN off entirely if your SKUs are internal codes that would mislead Google.
  • When neither a GTIN nor a brand plus MPN pair exists, the app emits identifier_exists automatically.

Dos

  • Use the manufacturer's real part number when you resell branded goods without barcodes.
  • Keep SKU and MPN aligned when you are the manufacturer. Your SKU is a legitimate MPN then.
  • Pair MPN with an accurate brand. Google only uses the two together.

Don'ts

  • Don't send made-up part numbers for products that have a GTIN. The GTIN wins, send that instead.
  • Don't send internal warehouse codes as MPN for branded products. Mismatches against Google's catalog cause disapprovals.
  • Don't share one MPN across different variants of different products.

Frequently asked questions

Is MPN required?

Only when the product has no GTIN. Then Google wants brand plus MPN, or identifier_exists set to no for products that genuinely have neither.

Can my SKU be the MPN?

Yes when you make the product or your SKU matches the manufacturer's part number. Otherwise turn MPN off in the app.

Does a wrong MPN get items disapproved?

It can. Google may flag the item when the brand and MPN pair contradicts its catalog data.
