Choose the right Google product category
The google_product_category places your product in Google's own taxonomy of more than 5,500 categories. It affects which searches items match, which attributes are required, and how tax and policy rules apply. Google auto-assigns a category when you omit it, but its guess is often shallow or wrong.
How this app fills it
- The Identifiers tab sets a feed wide category as either the numeric id or the full path.
- Any single product can override the category from the Products page.
- Left empty, the attribute is omitted and Google assigns one automatically.
- The Optimization page reminds you when no feed level category is set.
Dos
- Pick the deepest category that fits. Apparel & Accessories > Clothing > Dresses beats Apparel & Accessories.
- Set the feed wide category to what most of your catalog is, then override the exceptions per product.
- Check the category's rules. Apparel categories require color, size, gender and age group in several countries.
- Recheck after Google updates its taxonomy, which happens about once a year.
Don'ts
- Don't invent category names. Only values from Google's published taxonomy are valid.
- Don't pick a popular category that does not fit hoping for more traffic. Mismatches hurt relevance and can breach policy.
- Don't confuse this with product_type. That attribute is your own free text categorization.
Frequently asked questions
Is google_product_category required?
No. Google assigns one automatically when omitted. Setting it yourself is better because the automatic pick is often too shallow to compete well.
Should I use the id or the full path?
Both are valid. The numeric id is immune to renames in Google's taxonomy, the path is easier to read. This app accepts either.
Does a deeper category improve performance?
Usually yes. Deeper categories carry more precise matching signals and put your items in more specific comparisons.
