Material and pattern in Google Shopping

Updated 2026-07-19

Material describes what the product is made of, like leather or cotton. Pattern describes its print, like striped or floral. Both feed the attribute filters in Shopping results and matter most for apparel, accessories and furniture, where shoppers filter by them. Material allows up to 200 characters, pattern 100.

How this app fills it

  • By default the app finds variant options named material or pattern and sends their values.
  • The Detail tab can switch either to a custom expression or turn it off.
  • Any single product can override either value from the Products page.

Dos

  • Send the dominant material using common words shoppers filter by.
  • Combine up to three materials with slashes when needed, main material first.
  • Send pattern for printed products. Solid colored products can skip it.

Don'ts

  • Don't stuff care instructions or composition percentages into material.
  • Don't duplicate color in the pattern field. Striped is a pattern, navy is a color.
  • Don't send marketing words like premium as materials.

Frequently asked questions

Are material and pattern required?

No, but they are required to distinguish variants that differ only by material or pattern, and they improve filtering everywhere else.

How do I send a 60 percent cotton blend?

Send the dominant material, like cotton, or a slash combination such as cotton/polyester. Keep percentages on the product page.

My options are named Fabric, not Material. Does the mapping work?

The automatic pickup looks for options named material or pattern. For other names, point a custom expression at your option in the Detail tab.
