image_linkGoogle Shopping image requirements
- Required
- FeedShine sends
- Variant image, else featured image
The image is the largest part of a Shopping ad, and Google enforces hard rules on it. Minimum 100 by 100 pixels, or 250 by 250 for apparel. No watermarks, no promotional overlays, no placeholders. Beyond compliance, image quality decides clicks more than any other attribute.
How this app fills it
- By default the main image is the variant's own image when it has one, else the product's featured image. Untick Prefer variant images on the Media tab to always send the featured image.
- Your other product images follow as additional_image_link, in their Shopify order. Max additional images sets how many, up to Google's cap of 10.
- The Media tab can send something else for either one, like another field, a fixed URL, a custom expression or different rules for different products. Each also has a master field on the Master fields tab under Settings, so one rule can cover every feed.
- Any single product can override its images from the Products page, for one feed or all of them.
- Reordering images in Shopify changes what the feed sends on the next run.
- The Optimization page lists products with no image at all.
Dos
- Use images of at least 1024 by 1024 pixels so zoom works everywhere.
- Show the product on a white or transparent background for the main image.
- Give each variant its own image. Shoppers clicking a red shirt expect a red shirt.
- Send additional angles and lifestyle shots as extra images.
Don'ts
- No watermarks, logos or text overlays on the main image. Google disapproves them.
- No promotional graphics like sale badges baked into images.
- Don't use placeholder or coming soon images.
- Don't crop the product so parts are cut off in the main image.
Frequently asked questions
What image size does Google Shopping require?
At least 100 by 100 pixels, or 250 by 250 for apparel. In practice use 1024 by 1024 or larger so zoom and high density screens look sharp.
Why was my item disapproved for promotional overlay?
The image carries text, a logo or a badge. Upload a clean product shot to Shopify and the next feed run sends it.
How many images can I send?
One main image plus up to 10 additional images per item. By default this app sends your Shopify images in order, up to the number set in **Max additional images**.
Can one feed send a different main image?
Yes. On that feed's **Media** tab, pick another field, a custom expression or rules for some products. Your Shopify products stay as they are, and your other feeds keep their own images.
